Strengthening the cooperation with foreign countries

The Conference of Arab Interior Ministers in Beirut:

The Ministry of Interior and Municipalities of Lebanon played a crucial role in the Conference of Arab Interior Ministers that was held in Beirut for the first time since its inception 20 years ago, on January 29th – 30th, 2002.

The Conference on the relationship between the central administration and local administration was held under the auspices of His Excellency the President of the Lebanese Republic:

Attended the conference more than 150 Arab countries, in addition to several foreign countries.

Twinning of municipalities with those of foreign and Arab countries:

The Ministry has approved the twinning of 36 Lebanese municipalities with foreign and Arab municipalities, in conformity with the following schedule:

Beirut 1, Mount Lebanon 12, North Lebanon 1, Bekaa 20, Nabatieh 2, South Lebanon 0 = 36 Municipality.

  • Beirut cooperation agreement signed by the cities of Beirut and Athens in the field of municipal work
  • Hamana - Baabda
  • Mrayjeh - Tahouitet el Ghadir - Alilki Baabda Twinning with the French cities of SETE and the city of Toulon
  • Jounieh - Kasrawan twinning between the State of Kuwait and the Municipality of Jounieh.
  • Twinning between the municipality El Hadath Baabda and the municipality of San Benedetto / Italy.
  • Broumana Matan municipal affiliation to the Organization of United Cities and the Development Office.
  • Burj Hammoud, Metn twinned with the Municipality of Valence / France.

A circular on the contribution of the conference departments and organs to support children’s rights in the world, which was held in the U.S, was released by filling out forms and relevant publications’ distribution.

Foreign visits:

The Minister of Interior and Municipalities visited several countries abroad, including:

  • an official visit to each of the states of Qatar and United Arab Emirates, in order to obtain a tangible assistance for the internal security forces, and whereas 60 vehicles have been sent so far from the State of Qatar.
  • a visit to France to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy who was in 2003 an internal minister.
  • a visit to Switzerland that resulted to the signature of a cooperation protocol with the Swiss Federal Council in the field of civil protection, crises and natural disasters.
  • Accept an invitation to pay an official visit to meet French Interior Minister Daniel Fallan. The visit to Paris, focused on three points:
    • Bilateral relations, especially with regard to the Interior Ministry and security affairs, and the appropriate way of developing them.
    • The evolving of an international situation at the end of the events of September 11.
    • The exchange of experience with the strengthening of the internal security forces.
  • an official visit to Germany in response to a formal invitation from the Minister of Interior, Otto Chile, where a series of meetings were held and that were attended by security chiefs in Germany, and during which the participants reached a mutual understanding aiming at activating the cooperation between the two countries in order to preserve security and order. The German minister noted at the time the efforts made by the Minister El Murr in the context of crime, drug and trafficking fighting and other accomplishments within a short period of time.

The minister also participated in the Conference of Arab Interior Ministers that was held in Tunis, Tunisia.
