Road Safety

Average road accidents' rate

The Minister of interior and municipalities, Mr. Elias El Murr, sought to take successive preventive measures that resulted to the victims’ ratio drop, which put Lebanon in the advanced countries’ rank in the field of road safety.

For instance, the same ratio is more than 15/100000 per year in France, while it was decreased to 7/100000 per year in Lebanon.

Official vehicle control

According to an open auction, four mechanical revision stations were built in different areas in Lebanon. It is worth mentioning that the construction of the stations was planned and they were equipped and manned under the supervision of the Ministry.

The mandatory regular registered vehicle control started on a yearly period basis, according to conditions and criteria internationally recognized.

Many directives were issued, related to:

  • The mandatory use of the safety belt, where ISF and municipal police were charged of the implementation of this measure within every jurisdiction.
  • The necessity of controlling the trucks and the application of laws and regulations, related to the necessity of compelling the trucks to take the appropriate measures in order to avoid load spills on the roads and maintain public safety.
  • Regulating the traffic in all Lebanese areas where schools and universities are established through increasing the number of disseminated patrols both at the entrance and exit time.
  • Solving the problem related to wasted water on the roads in summer time, given that this problem used to cause traffic accidents and asking the mayors and department governors to task ISF and municipal police in controlling water spill caused by buildings under construction on the main roads, and in preventing carwash stations of spilling water on the roads.
  • Forbidding the ministry of interior and ISF's vehicles from running on fuel and switching their engine into gas running engines, as well as forbidding public and private vehicles from running on fuel.
  • Giving instructions to all police and municipal police officers and traffic ISF agents to work on facilitating the passage of all ISF, civil defense, firemen, first aid and institutions and society vehicles tasked in emergency transportation, notably when they have recourse to their sirens and emergency lights.
  • Mandating ISF and other security forces in sticking to their planned itinerary and boundaries on public roads and taking sanctions against trespassers.
  • Issuing instructions on motorbikes and calling mayors and department governors to ask the municipalities to stress on implementing traffic law regulations on motorbikes' owners, especially in the context of helmet's wearing during driving, and preventing a second person to ride the bike unless the bike is well-equipped to that end, as well as preventing the use of bikes for goods' transportation, which could hinder bikes' driving and induce danger on circulation, and finally on complying with motorbikes registration facility and paying the appropriate taxes.
  • The launching of public media campaigns with 4 million distributed tracts aiming at reinforcing road public safety.
